It is knowledge, imagination, expression; an enrapturing venture through time, space, and planes of existence. This odyssey is what fascinates me and has inspired me, or addicted me, to pursuing art. When either creating or viewing a piece of art, we experience, learn, move, and gather knowledge about ourselves or things that were once completely alien to us. We are pulled through doors and shoved out windows. We are taken gently by the hand or taken roughly by the collar and yanked around places we may not even want to go. This is the kind of feeling I want to evoke with my art, I want to make people feel, learn, and experience things, either by choice or by force. I want to open eyes, mouths, hearts, and minds. |
In this quest, an important key is to embrace as many styles, influences, and mediums as I possibly can and use them to express whatever I feel I must, as if speaking to people many languages, hoping that they will understand one of them. No matter how plentiful my skills come to be, or how many techniques I learn, I will always consider myself limited and lacking. Art is limitless, but I want to take in, embrace, and share as much as I possibly can. I am constantly challenging myself to try working on different scales, with different mediums, in different styles, and though the process may be wonderful or painful; the brush may flow freely or my hand may reject every stroke; to me it is all worthwhile. Every piece I create is a part of me, completely honest and willfully sacrificed. The human mind is far more limited than art; the distances it can reach, the information it can hold, the depth that even the flat surface of a canvas can contain. However, through the sharing and creating of art, we can glimpse the distances, information, and depth, and keep it with us.
